Mr Richard Kofi Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has outlined his vision for the GOC to members of the Olympic Movement.
He made his submission to members in a two-day retreat in Koforidua organised by the GOC to coincide with the first month of the newly elected Executive Board.
His vision which was in five thematic areas had athletes and women empowerment taking center stage.
His vision for the GOC was to put athletes at the center of whatever they do by supporting their training programmes with grants and scholarships to prepare them for competitions as well as foster and engaging yet high-performance athletes centered environment and support the Athletes Commission to be fully operational and involved in the decision-making process at the GOC.
Another vision of the GOC President is to build capacity of stakeholders and enhance the role of women which he explained that the GOC will build capacity of administrators, coaches, media, technical and medical officials and support athletes to transition into retirement while enhancing the role of women at all levels from administrators to coaches and technical officials.
He assured the members that he would adopt an inclusive and transparent leadership style backed with passion and integrity by working with all federations and leaders to build a team that will work in unity.
He said he would emphasise the importance of communication to build trust and transparency by acknowledging the role and importance of all stakeholders.
Mr Akpokavie further mentioned that as President of the GOC, he would build a strong and collaborative partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the National Sports Authority.
He added that he would also collaborate with the Ghana Education Service to teach students and emphasise the importance of the Olympic and Commonwealth values and ideals.
He would also build strong relationships with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and other anti-doping agencies to promote clean sport through education and testing.
His last vision which is the main challenge in Ghana sports was funding. He said he would partner with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to actualize the establishment of the Sports Fund and apply for any eligible funding from the Olympic Solidarity and the Commonwealth Sport.
